How do I transfer files from my old computer to my new computer?

Easy transfer allows for the copying of files and settings (user accounts, music, pictures, video, email, documents, internet favorites) from your old computer to your new Windows 7 computer. Applications do not copy. You will need to install a fresh copy on the new computer.

To complete the easy transfer you must have already set up your home network including this computer, have the files on an external hard drive or USB thumb drive, or purchase an easy transfer USB cable (this is a specially designed USB calbe and not a standard one.)

  1. Open the Windows Easy Transfer window. You may do this by typing Easy Transfer in the search box.
  2. Select whether you are using an easy transfer cable, a network, or an external hard disk or USB flash drive.
  3. You will be selecting this as your new system, but you will need to first download and install one of the following on the old XP or Vista system. If the old computer has Windows 7 installed, you may simply start the easy transfer process. Select the correct operating system of your old computer.

  5. Once the executable is installed on the old system, you will be able to complete the transfer.

Please remember to run a thorough antispyware and antivirus utility on your old computer. Viruses and malware can transfer.
