{"id":2867,"date":"2022-01-21T16:16:38","date_gmt":"2022-01-21T16:16:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.velocitymicro.com\/blog\/?p=2867"},"modified":"2022-01-21T16:31:51","modified_gmt":"2022-01-21T16:31:51","slug":"what-is-ddr5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.velocitymicro.com\/blog\/what-is-ddr5\/","title":{"rendered":"What is DDR5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2870\" src=\"https:\/\/www.velocitymicro.com\/img\/blog\/ddr5\/ddr5-blog-banner.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With the release of Intel\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.velocitymicro.com\/blog\/intel-12th-gen-core-benchmarks\/\">12<sup>th<\/sup> Gen Core Processors<\/a> has also come support for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.velocitymicro.com\/blog\/all-about-intel-p-vs-e-cores\/\">several new technologies<\/a>. None is bigger than DDR5 Memory. But what is DDR5 and how does it impact overall system performance?<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is DDR5?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>DDR5 is simply the 5<sup>th<\/sup> generation of DDR Memory and the natural evolution following DDR4. Basically, it\u2019s the newer, faster RAM. Bandwidth (speed) and density (RAM capacity per DIMM) have increased over previous gen, while power consumption has decreased.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Performance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>With increased RAM bandwidth comes higher default RAM speeds. Though higher speeds like 4133MHz were available for DDR4, 3200MHz was the highest default speed available \u2013 anything higher was factory overclocked. DDR5\u2019s higher bandwidth means 4800MHz or even 5200MHz speeds without overclocking. That\u2019s a significant jump, but how does that translate to real world performance? That answer depends on exactly what you use your PC for.<\/p>\n<p>With gaming, graphics cards are normally the performance bottleneck, so modern processors and RAM upgrades typically only offer incremental frame rate gains. Check out this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/features\/ddr5-vs-ddr4-is-it-time-to-upgrade-your-ram#:~:text=DDR5%20Gaming%20Performance&amp;text=The%20DDR5%20results%20clearly%20showed,C36%20was%20only%202%25%20faster.\">data from Tom\u2019s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net\/mRPGJmnvD7ruzEAHVr7uMH-970-80.png\" alt=\"What is DDR5\" width=\"970\" height=\"685\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, going from DDR4-2133 to DDR5-6000 produces only a marginal FPS gain of about 8%. 3200 to 6000 was closer to 2%. It\u2019s not nothing, but certainly not worth investing in a whole new platform.<\/p>\n<p>The story does change somewhat with benchmarks that more heavily rely on RAM performance. Again, from Tom\u2019s:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net\/y6aGuAsQxneAZdrh8jzZKB-970-80.png\" alt=\"DDR5 benchmarks\" width=\"970\" height=\"685\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here we do see gains in the 10% range going from DDR4-3200 to DDR5-6000. Nothing spectacular, but still significant.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2871\" src=\"https:\/\/www.velocitymicro.com\/img\/blog\/ddr5\/tridentz5.jpg\" alt=\"Trident DDR5 RAM\" width=\"640\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What hardware supports DDR5?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As of this post, only 12<sup>th<\/sup> Gen Intel Core processors support DDR5, and only with specific Z690 chipset motherboards designed for it (yes there are also DDR4 only Z690 boards just to add to the confusion). Upcoming Intel and AMD processors set to be released later this year will all support the new memory too though, so we will eventually start to see full integration of DDR5 just as we did with prior generations of memory.<\/p>\n<p>Ready to order your DDR5 PC?
