If you polled 1000 random people, they would probably be split down the middle on the topic.

To be honest there are really good arguments to be made for either side, and it will ultimately come down to what you personally want or find valuable.

Advantages of Building Custom Gaming Computers

Custom built gaming computers offer many advantages over their pre-built counterparts.

Hand Picked Components:

Component selection is a big benefit of custom gaming machines. Being able to pick out all of your parts down to the last wire is a luxury not found in prebuilt systems. You can pick everything from the case, to the system RAM. This lets you build a system capable of doing exactly what you want it too.

If you need lots of graphical horsepower, no problem just pick up a 1080Ti. Looking for a casual work computer? That’s easy too, an Intel Core i5 or Ryzen 5 based system should serve you very well.

Another advantage you will typically find is price. With a few exceptions custom gaming computers are usually a bit cheaper then their pre-built counter parts.

Disadvantages of Custom Gaming Computers

It isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. There are also some disadvantages you should consider when thinking about going with a custom PC. The biggest downside to building a gaming PC is undoubtedly the many areas of risk.

When you assemble a system yourself, you have to diagnose and assess any issues that you have with your components. All repairs and fixes fall on you. There is no general system warranty, yes you can take it to your local repair shop but that can become costly very fast.

You also have to purchase and build the system yourself which is time consuming. PC assembly isn’t incredibly difficult, but it can be challenging in certain spots. Setting up your cooling, or wires incorrectly can lead to issues or component failure.

Which System Type Should You Choose?

This article wasn’t written to persuade you one way or the other. We simply wanted to highlight the positives and negatives to help make you decision easier.

Velocity Micro offers both custom and pre-assembled PC’s. You should be able to find a system that fits your needs.

Buying Custom Gaming Computers People have been debating building vs buying PC’s since the 90’s.
