One of the cool features that many new laptops have these days is a touch screen. We use touch screens all day long on our smartphones and tablets, so why wouldn’t we want the same for our gaming computers?

Well, not so fast.

Touch screens look pretty neat, but there are things you’ll want to consider before making your purchase. We’d hate to see you pay more for a feature you won’t like.

Let’s talk about the pros and cons to touch screens and whether one is right for your computer needs.

What are the Benefits?

Windows has shifted to a tile design that is complemented by touch screen functionality. If you appreciate Window’s design and use the tiles often, a touch screen will add some fluidity to your movements.

Also, some computer users say they enjoy browsing online using a touch screen. It feels comfortable and natural, and they’re able to swipe through the results they’re interested in.

Aside from these two benefits, however, the case for touch screen laptops ends there.

What are the Drawbacks?

Not everyone is on board with touch screen gaming computers. Some users say that touch screens are not necessary on laptops. The angle of the screen makes it difficult to use, and an attached keyboard is more familiar and comfortable.

Second, the links and buttons on touch screens are small, and this can make clicking frustrating. It’s easier and more direct to use a mouse or touchpad, especially when shopping, filling out forms, etc.

A few other disadvantages to consider include a heavier weight (touch screens add about 0.2 to 0.4 pounds), worse battery life and poor viewing angles. Not to mention, they are usually more expensive. Features cost money.

What’s the Verdict?

In the end, it’s most important that you feel good about your decision. If you enjoy the touch screen functionality and feel that it’s something you will use, go for it. Generally, the touch screen functionality doesn’t seem to meet any necessary needs, and most laptop tasks remain easier with the traditional mouse or touchpad.

Thinking about getting a new laptop computer?
