How do I connect analog or digital speakers (2.1, 4.1, 5.1 and 6.1) to Creative SoundBlaster Audigy2 sound cards?
All of the Creative SoundBlaster Audigy2 sound cards currently being sold are not color coded but the speaker setup for these types of sound cards are still very similar to the previous generation SoundBlaster Audigy and Live series sound cards.
The picture below shows a SoundBlaster Audigy as you would see it if you where looking at the back of your case. Since the 1/8 inch connectors on most speaker systems are color coded we will use the most common colors as a reference for the following instructions:
Line Out 3 Jack — It connects to Center, Subwoofer and Rear Center Out of analog 5.1 and 6.1 speaker systems. The connector that plugs into this jack is usually orange.
Line Out 2 Jack — It connects to the rear speakers of analog 4.1, 5.1 and 6.1 speaker systems, the connector that plugs into this jack is usually black.
Line Out 1 Jack — It connects to the speakers of analog 2.0, 2.1, 4.1, 5.1 and 6.1 speakers systems also analog headphones. The connector that plugs into this jack is usually green.
Microphone In Jack — This jack is only used if the headphones that are being used have built in microphone or of course if a standalone microphone is to be used. The color coding for the connector that plugs into this jack is pink.
Line In Jack — This jack will not be used at all with any type of speaker configuration and is only used to input a sound signal into the system. The color of the connector varies depending on the source but previously this connector was usually color coded in blue.
Digital Out Jack — This jack outputs a 6 channel or compressed AC-3 S/PDIF signal to be used for connecting digital speaker systems. The color coding for the connector that plugs to the Digital Out jack is irrelevant since Digital Speaker Systems will only have a single connector to connect to the sound card.
Once the speaker system has been properly plugged into the back of the case, we use the Creative Speaker Settings. This utility can be accessed by clicking on the Start menu followed by clicking on All Programs then Creative then SoundBlaster Audigy 2 and finally Creative Speaker Settings.
From this menu we select the type of speaker configuration we plan to use. By placing a check mark on the Digital Output Only check box we let the computer know that the speakers we are currently using are Digital Speakers. Since most Digital 5.1 Speaker Systems can use both analog and digital signals you might be required to select the type of signal you are using from the speakers’ control pod/box.
Having selected your speaker type you can make sure everything is working properly by pressing the Channel or Noise buttons. You can also run the Speaker Calibrator Wizard by clicking the Calibrate Button.
