Home Server Storage can’t calculate the size for a shared folder, what should I do?

Symptoms:

Size calculation for certain folders listed below the pie chart In the home server console Server Storage never stops. In the home server console Shared Folders tab, some folders appear with size unknown.

Cause:

In order for Windows Home Server to calculate folder size “Administrators” and “System” require “Full Control” privilege or folder calculation will fail.

Resolution:

Assuming the failing folder is \\server\shares\photos. Reset security owner permissions on the shared folder:

For Windows Vista:

  1. Click Start Button
  2. Type in the search bar, “MSTSC”
  3. In the remote desktop windows, type your Windows Home Server name. This is usually “Server” and click Connect.
  4. For username type, “Administrator” for password, type your Windows Home Server Console password.
  5. Reset owner information:
    1. Right click on the d:\shares\photos folder, select properties, and security tab.
    2. Click on the Advanced button.
    3. Click on the Owner tab. Make sure Administrator Account is listed.
    4. Select “Replace owner on sub containers and objects” option.
    5. Click Apply.
    6. Repeat for all photos shadow directories which may be found under D:\DE\shares\ and under C:\FS\[some number or digit]\de\shares\
  6. Reset security permissions on the shared folder:
    1. Right click on the d:\shares\photos folder, select Properties, and Security tab.
    2. Click on the Advanced button.
    3. Click on the Permissions tab.
    4. Check the “Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects” option.
    5. Click Apply.
  7. Reboot.

For Windows XP:

  1. Click Start Button
  2. Click Run
  3. Type in the search bar, “MSTSC”

  6. Reset owner information:

    5. Click Apply.
